Don’t Let Sleep Apnea Or Snoring Keep You Awake

When you sleep, the muscles in your body relax, including throat muscles and the tongue. The soft tissues also relax and may come so close together that they almost touch. This creates an obstruction, and when you breathe, air must force its way past the tissues, causing them to vibrate. The noise created by the vibrations is what’s commonly known as snoring.

Until recently, snoring was regarded as annoying but harmless. Now we know better. Constant, noisy snoring has health consequences for the snorer, as well as his or her loved ones. Some snores have been measured at 80 decibels, which is very loud. To put in perspective, chainsaws and jackhammers are measured at around 90 decibels. The continued exposure to this noise level can cause hearing damage, high blood pressure, and cardiovascular problems.

In addition, snoring can be a sign of obstructive sleep apnea, or OSA. Sleep apnea is characterized by the cessation of breathing for up to 10 seconds multiple times per night. Sleep apnea sufferers are awakened over and over as their brains, suffering from lack of oxygen, tell them to breathe. Because of this, patients with sleep apnea wake up in the morning feeling tired, irritable, and often suffering from headaches and sore throats. Sleep apnea is a serious condition that carries serious health risks including an increased possibility of heart attack, stroke, memory loss, and even premature death. Sleep apnea is also linked to weight gain, type 2 diabetes, adult asthma, and acid reflux.

In addition to the health risks directly associated with sleep apnea, being sleep deprived can create additional complications including daytime drowsiness, fatigue, and irritability. Children and adolescents with sleep apnea may perform poorly in school or have behavior issues. Adults with sleep apnea are up to five times more likely to be involved in automobile accidents.

At Dailey Dental offer snore guards to help you get the sleep you need to feel rested and protect your health. A snore guard is a comfortable, custom-fit oral appliance that helps prevent snoring. Snore guards work by positioning the jaw slightly forward, which helps open up airways and allow you to breath more easily. If you or your partner snores, it’s time to contact Dailey Dental for your sleep apnea consultation today.
